Varicose veins
Varicose veins are a common condition, occurring in over one third of the population. They usually occur in the legs and can cause veins to bulge or look twisted.
Varicose veins cause a dull, heavy ache in the leg.
They may present as twisted, bulging veins, or cause swelling. They can also cause dry, itchy skin.
Long periods of standing can worsen symptoms. Resting with your legs elevated can provide relief.
Varicose veins occur when the valves in your veins don’t effectively push the blood back up towards your heart, causing blood to pool at weakened valves, or flow backwards.
Family history is a key factor in the condition. Other risk factors include: being a woman, your age, weight and pregnancy.
