Bacterial vaginosis
Bacterial vaginosis will affect 35% of people with a vagina at some time in their life.
BV isn’t an STI, but can be triggered by sex. It can also make you more vulnerable to STIs, as it changes the pH of your vagina, providing less natural protection.
The main symptom is a change in your discharge. It may be white, grey, green, thinner or watery. It will likely have a strong, fishy smell.
BV might also cause burning when you pee, but usually doesn’t come with sensations like itching or soreness. If you’re experiencing discomfort, it’s a good idea to have a sexual health check – as some STIs cause similar symptoms.
Using fragranced soaps or products on your vulva or vagina can trigger BV.
Other risk factors include a new sexual partner or having an IUD.
We can test for bacterial vaginosis and assess the health of your vaginal microbiome.
