Concussion
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury which alters brain function. A blow to the head or body causes the head to move back and forth rapidly, resulting in damage to the brain. 15% of those who experience concussion will suffer long term complications. Symptoms may be temporary, but in some cases can go on for weeks or months.
Checking the initial impact of the concussion is essential. This may involve a trip to A&E or calling an ambulance to rule out serious injuries.
Though Hollywood seems to think that you have to lose consciousness to have a concussion, this isn’t the case. A concussion occurs when there is an injury to the head.
Symptoms may include memory problems, confusion, headaches, dizziness, nausea, slow responses and being off-balance or co-ordination problems.
The person with a concussion may also be accompanied by a spinal injury, so if you see an injured person with a resulting concussion, call an ambulance. Do not try and move them.
Our bodies store emotions. After a concussion, your body may engage its fight or flight response. Skilled bodywork like osteopathy, craniosacral therapy and acupuncture help ease the emotional effects of concussion and support nervous system recovery.
